there’s something about sharky
Our hotel, the Residence Inn La Jolla, is great. It is quite spacious and the beds are comfortable. The area we are in is lovely, it has houses on hillsides with roads that undulate through tree lined avenues. It feels European in a Spanish & Italian fashion. We ambled down to breakfast just before 9 and picked up some brochures for the local amenities. After toying with the idea of a pirate themed cruise we opted instead to visit the Birch Aquarium which is very close by. On the way in we were informed that there was a shark feeding scheduled for 10:30, I told the kids not to stand up if they ask for volunteers.
The Aquarium was very interesting, quite similar to the Melbourne Aquarium but with a focus on the local fish. I can see where the inspiration for Sponge Bob comes from… especially the giant clams. At 10:30 we headed out to the shark display to watch several “fish on a stick” treats being served up to the tank residents.
After watching the sharks eat up we finished the remainder of the indoor tour then returned to the outside area beside the shark tank. They have some outdoor water saving play and displays which kept out kids well occupied for nearly two hours.
It was similar to the Questacon in Canberra, which we visited when we first moved to Australia (at that time we visited the Questacon every day for our week’s stay and had to drag the kids out of the water feature each day!).In this part of the Aquarium we could look out over the beach, watching surfers and dolphins in the bay. After the Aquarium we had lunch at Whole Foods, then perused the shops before coming back to the hotel for a swim in the pool and dinner.
